How it works
Six teams per league make the postseason: the three division winners plus the three best remaining records (the wild cards). The top two division winners get first-round byes.
- Magic number (M#)
- Any combination of wins by this team and losses by its closest pursuer totaling this number locks up the division (or, for WC M#, a wild card berth). At zero, it's clinched.
- Elimination number (E# / WC E#)
- Any combination of losses by this team and wins by the leader (or the last wild card holder) totaling this number ends the chase. At zero, the team is out of that race.
- The grid
- Each cell is the row team's magic number to finish with a strictly better record than the column team — wins by the row team and losses by the column team both count toward it. ✓ means the row team has already guaranteed the better record; ✗ means it no longer can. Darker cells are closer to being settled.
- Scores
- The scoreboard shows today by default; use the arrows (or the left and right arrow keys) to step through other days. Each card opens the game on MLB.com Gameday. Today's cards are ordered by what rides on them: games where a club can clinch (outlined blue, marked ✓) come first, then games where a club can be eliminated (red, marked ✕), then games whose result feeds someone else's race (dashed), then the rest by start time. The clinch and elimination watch below spells out every way a club could settle something today, measured from where the standings stood this morning. A scenario stays on the list once the games that decide it are over: tinted if it happened, greyed out if it did not, with the results that settled it either way.
- Team details
- Click a team name in the standings to see when it clinched or was eliminated (found by replaying the official standings day by day), what is still undecided, and its recent and upcoming games.
- Ties
- Since 2022 MLB plays no tiebreaker games — identical records are split by head-to-head record, then intradivision record, then record against the rest of the league, then a last-half-of-season comparison. This page reads every result of the season and works the first three out itself, so once a club has locked up the tiebreaker over a rival it clinches (and the rival is eliminated) a game sooner than the raw arithmetic: on the last day a club holding the tiebreaker clinches with a win or its rival's loss, while the other side needs its win and the rival's loss. While a tiebreaker is still undecided, or would come down to the fourth rule, the numbers assume nothing and a race stays open until it is settled outright; if MLB declares it decided anyway, the official standings say so and this page follows them. Ties between three or more clubs use MLB's combined-record rules, which are not modelled: those numbers are worked out club against club.
Standings data from the public MLB Stats API, refreshed every 60 seconds while games are in progress and only as needed otherwise (hover the countdown to see why). This build runs the standings model, clinch math and rendering in WebAssembly compiled from Rust. Wild card clinch numbers and the grid are computed here from wins, losses, games remaining and the season's results. This site is a fan project and is not affiliated with or endorsed by MLB.
